      “ Each day andnight, weekends and holidays, some 36,000 airmen are on duty maintainingnuclear weapons systems in secure, ready status. These tasks are vital to thesecurity of the United States. Recently, the Air Force Chief of Staff, FourStar General Mark A Welsh III, sent a communication to some 36,000 airmen onduty with the nuclear deterrent. The General spoke of the history evolving thedevelopment of nuclear weapons in the Strategic Air Command and Air ForceSystems Command. The General said in part, the following words.

     “Today, theglobal challenges may be different, but the importance of nuclear deterrence toour national security as well as the security of our allies and partners,remains. Our nation will rely on nuclear forces for decades to come, and wemust continue to conduct deterrence operations to dissuade adversaries fromaggression, extend protection to our allies and partners, and provide assuranceguarantees to maintain security relationships and support nonproliferation.
     You have spentthe last four  years reinvigorating andstrengthening the Air Force nuclear enterprise, and you’ve reinforced a strongculture of compliance, precision, reliability, and critical self-assessment. Asyour Chief, I want you to know that stewardship of a safe, secure, andeffective nuclear deterrent remains the #1 priority. Our focus will not waver.We will sustain an uncompromising standard of excellence in nuclear deterrenceoperations. We will continue to invest in our nuclear weapons systems as wellas the most important part of deterrence, the airmen who make it reality… thatwould be YOU.
      The Nation andour allies rely on your commitment to excellence. Your accomplishments makeclear that deterrence is our duty, assurance is our promise, and globalstrategy is our goal. Thank you for the way you do your job. ..I couldn’t beprouder of you.  “
